What You'll Do
The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for the general upkeep and repair of agency facilities, grounds, and equipment to ensure a safe and well-maintained environment. This role assists with routine maintenance tasks, minor repairs, and troubleshooting to keep the property in optimal condition. Additionally, the Maintenance Assistant supports housekeeping efforts as needed to maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the facility.
*This is a Part-Time position
Responsibilities
- Perform routine building maintenance, including painting, minor carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical repairs, HVAC, drain pumps, and replacing or repairing ballasts and bulbs; unpack, assemble, and set up delivered merchandise, office furniture, pictures, blinds, wallboards, and other equipment; assist with staff relocations within or outside the agency or facility, including moving and arranging furniture as needed
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance to ensure compliance with safety guidelines and local regulations; clean and maintain the interior and exterior of the building using approved chemicals and proper usage protocols while stocking and restocking supplies, inventory, and equipment to support facility upkeep and a safe environment
- Inspect, maintain, and perform necessary repairs on all facility vehicles to ensure they remain in safe working condition, including regular checks on mechanical systems, lighting, and safety features, as well as ensuring compliance with all agency policies and regulatory requirements; ensure all vehicles have current registration and undergo mandated inspections
- Collaborate with other departments and work closely with selected vendors, contractors, and sub-trade contractors to ensure daily maintenance tasks, project-based solutions, emergency repairs, and preventative maintenance are completed efficiently; foster teamwork to support the overall safety, functionality, and upkeep of the facility.
- Assist with the maintenance and upkeep of the barn, ensuring all structures, equipment, and animal enclosures remain safe, clean, and in good condition; provide proper care for all animals, including feeding, watering, and monitoring their health, ensuring all required vaccinations, medical tests, and animal care practices comply with agency policies and regulatory standards
- Perform partial maintenance after hours to prevent disruptions to operations and respond to emergency calls as needed, assisting during mandated evacuations by securing facilities and following established evacuation policies and procedures

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Working knowledge of building maintenance procedures and techniques
- Ability to see the differences in colors, shades, and brightness; ability to see objects in very bright or dim light
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; ability to assemble using written instructions
- Ability to handle emergencies with or without limited supervision
- Ability to prioritize and complete assigned tasks and unplanned requests during shift
- Must have valid TX driver license and auto insurance to be designated as an authorized driver
- Ability to operate and handle machinery, equipment, and tools necessary for maintenance and repair
Preferred Qualifications
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (based on service populations and area)
- HVAC Certification
- Six (6) months of maintenance and repair experience
- General contractor experience
- Working knowledge of reading blueprints
Physical Demands & Work Conditions
- This position requires sitting and looking and using a computer for long periods of time
- Position works in a child facility and has constant exposure to children
- Position requires frequent standing, walking and time in units/cottages which are areas where children reside
- Lift, push, pull, move up to 125 lbs.
