Description

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: Responsible for counseling students, applicants, and parents on all Federal, State, and University student aid programs and the financial aid process. Awards aid to students and monitors student’s eligibility for all student aid programs. In addition, assumes responsibility for one or more specialized student aid areas and or programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: Performs a variety of moderately complex professional tasks in the Financial Aid & Scholarships office that include a significant amount of student and parent contact and the consistent application of Federal, State, and University policies and procedures to ensure program compliance, integrity, and sound fiscal procedure. Applies the application of student aid principles in both knowledge and judgment, techniques, standards, guides, and professional skills. Plans, counsels, and uses professional judgment and effective decision-making to ensure that their student population is processed efficiently and effectively. Provides financial aid counseling to prospective, current, alumni students, and families through e-mail, telephone, and in-person appointments.

Uses appropriate Federal, State, and University standards to evaluate information provided by financial aid applicants to determine eligibility for specific types of assistance. In special cases, involving unusual circumstances exercises professional judgment based on experience and a thorough knowledge of appropriate Federal Regulations. Coordinates and awards students enrolled in Extended University degree-seeking programs and serves as a liaison for Extended University students, staff, and faculty. Coordinates with the appropriate departments such as Extended University and Student Business Services. Conducts financial aid presentations in individual and group settings to on-campus and off-campus constituents.

Performs additional related duties as assigned. 

SUPERVISOR/OTHER WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Under general supervision reports directly to the Associate Director of Financial Aid & Scholarships. As part of the financial aid counseling team works closely with the financial aid staff, student assistants, Enrollment Management staff, and collaborates with Extended University (EU) and other campus partners. Maintains cooperative working relationships with staff, faculty, and campus administrators.



Requirements

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university and a minimum of two years of professional experience working in financial aid preferred. General knowledge of student aid methods of organizational and program management required.

Ability to perform accurately in a detailed-oriented environment, handle multiple priorities, and organize and plan work projects. Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports. Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of financial aid and the ability to apply knowledge to situations where precedents do not exist or are ambiguous. Ability to use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to obtain factual and interpretative information through research and interviews. Must be able to maintain a positive and effective working environment between the Financial Aid & Scholarships office and other department’s on and off campus. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations and to create solutions to student problems that integrate the full range of University resources. Must be sensitive to the needs of individuals while maintaining the legal and fiscal integrity of Federal, State, and University aid programs. Ability to analyze complex situations and determine appropriate courses of action while engaged with students in personal interactions of a sensitive nature. Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, staff, faculty, and the community and the ability to function as a member of the financial aid team. Ability to use standard office software including but not limited to Microsoft Office and student aid systems such as Oracle PeopleSoft, Common Origination and Disbursement (COD), WebGrants, NSLDS, FAA Access, Campus Logic, etc.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

The person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 Revised July 21, 2017 as a condition of employment.
